He created ballet scores, such as The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913), for Diaghilev. These were followed by neoclassical works, including Oedipus Rex (1927) and the Symphony of Psalms (1930). The 1950s saw him reconciled to serial techniques, which he employed in such works as the Canticum Sacrum (1955), the ballet Agon (1957), and Requiem Canticles (1966)
